Bernadette from That's My Style - Autumn Essentials

If you want to admit it or not, Autumn has arrived and we need to adjust our wardrobes to allow for the change in season. Autumn dressing is about layers, mix n match and clever use of colour to bring interest to your basics.

Bernadette from That’s My Style has collated a list of stylish essentials to start planning your Autumn wardrobe:

The Trench

A truly timeless and stylish lightweight coat that is perfect for the Autumn weather. Often clients have a trench in the wardrobe but they don’t know how to wear it or it is slightly too tight to button up – Wear it open with the belt tied at the back. If the trench isn’t for you, then think about a blazer.

Shirt / Blouse in Plain and Prints

If a crisp shirt is not something you are comfortable wearing, then the equivalent is a blouse. A shirt becomes a blouse when it has a more distinctive feminine look with softer fabrics and even ruffles. A blouse requires less ironing and can be tucked in or worn loose. Invest in a few interchangeable options in plain colours and also a new season print.

Skirt

Depending on your style, there is a skirt suitable for every body type. The big looks for the season are pleated skirts, leather, denim and military inspired skirts. All styles can be worn casually with a tucked in tee or worn to work with a soft blouse in a neutral colour like white, dusty pink or khaki.

Ankle Boots

The ultimate autumn footwear. Can be worn with jeans, skirts, maxi dresses and straight leg pants with ease. If boots are not for you, then invest in a good quality leather loafer in black or a metallic. Both the boot and loafer are perfect for busy days and relaxed weekends.

Straight Leg Denim Jeans or Leather Look Pant

The streamlined silhouette allows you to easily layer for warmth. Wear with an ankle boot or loafer by day or a pointy toe heel for night.

Knit

Nothing says effortless dressing like a longline knit jumper. Add scarves or a necklace for interest. A blanket wrap scarf is also an easy way to add colour and it’s the perfect item for a busy day where movement is important or the perfect travel item when weather is trans-seasonal

Wool or Felt Fedora

A must have for those bad hair days. It’s also a great way to stay warm and can make an outfit look more out together. Many options on the market at the moment and across all budgets.

Leather or Denim Biker Jacket

Essential for your autumn wardrobe. Turns your summer wardrobe instantly into a trans-seasonal wardrobe with the addition of a cropped jacket. Toss it on with a maxi dress, jeans and tee or back with a pleated skirt and lace-up brogues. Versatile and stylish.

Handbag – day and night option

It’s crucial to have the right size handbag that will carry all your essentials. Shopping this week with a client really made me think about important it is to invest in the right bag. Spend as much as your budget will allow buying the best quality and most suitable to your lifestyle. Think about the size, the colour of the leather and even if the hardware is gold or silver. Ideally a day size tote (in a neutral colour like tan) and an evening clutch in black.

Anyone who knows me well will know that accessories are always a MUST for any season. The fun accessories to explore for Autumn are abstract print scarves, pastel coloured wool fedora hats, matt black or industrial style accessories with leather, stones and even stainless steel trims. Oversized big drop earrings with tassels are a current trend or for a more subtle and feminine feel, then look for layered fine necklaces. Accessories are the easiest way to add splashes of colour to your Autumn wardrobe.

Embrace the new season by having a wardrobe edit before introducing your new autumn purchases. Having an organised wardrobe will save you precious time everyday when getting dressed.
